Home of the Missouri Tigers, Faurot
Field is known for one thing, the Block ‘M’. A new stadium for the
Tigers was built to accommodate bigger crowds. In 1926, construction
began on Faurot Field and was completed the following year. Built at a
cost of $350,000, the Tigers played their first game at the stadium on
October 2, 1926, against Tulane. The stadium had an original capacity
of 25,000 and was named after former Tiger Coach and Athletic Director
Don Faurot.
The feature that has remained a
constant at Faurot Field since its opening is the huge Block ‘M’.
Located on the north side of the stadium, it was carved from stone by
the freshman class in 1927. Between 1949 and 1965 there were numerous
expansions to the stadium including enclosing the stadium and adding
decks on both sides of the playing field. Prior to the start of the
1968
season, a new press box with VIP lounges was built on the west side
of the stadium. In 1985, the grass field was replaced by artificial
turf, however, ten years later, it was switched back. The most recent
addition to Memorial Stadium was completed before the 1996 season
when lights were installed. A $5 million 30x80 foot HD video board
was installed in the north endzone in 2009. In the future, seating may be placed in the south endzone,
enclosing the stadium. Today, Memorial Stadium has a seating capacity
of just over 71,000. Fans attending games at Memorial Stadium have seen many
great victories over the years, including 14 seasons in which the Tigers went undefeated.
