Game Day Experiences
(Views on this page do not
represent the views of College Gridirons.)
Amon Carter Stadium
Name: Nate
Grade: B
Pros: The
stadium sits right next to TCU's beautiful campus, right in the heart
of Fort Worth. The view from the upper deck is great you get an really
good perspective on the game. The TCU band is one of the best in the
nation it is worth the price of the ticket just to watch them play.
Cons: TCU does not get
good attendance, and it does not get very loud. There are supports for
the upper deck obstruct the view of some of the lower deck seats.
Memorable Moments:
Watching LT run.
Arizona Stadium
Name: Mugtaba Idris
Grade: A
Pros: 2005
Arizona vs. #9 UCLA
homecoming weekend
As I walked into the stadium the emotion coming from within me
intensified. I could smell food and see other fans chanting "beardown
arizona" at the top of their lungs. The closer i got to my seat, the
more vibes i could sense in the air. The entire stadium was dressed in
red and blue When I reached my seat with my soda and burger in hand,
the crowd was really getting loud. I couldn't hear myself talk to my
friend next to me. the game was a complete blowout. 52-14. I have
never seen a ranked team get whipped so bad by a non-ranked opponent
before. We stormed the field and the festivities went on all night.
Cons: Needs to be
bigger in order to fit more crazy University of Arizona Wildcat
football fans.
Memorable Moments:
Arizona 52 #9 UCLA 14
Autzen Stadium
Name: Ducks Fan
Grade: A
Pros: Everything is so
close to the field. Some seats are less than 5 feet from the field.
It is only one story and is very steep. The sound is defining. It is
the best stadium I have ever been.
Cons: Very Few! It is very
hard to get tickets because there are not many seats.
Memorable Moments: The Michigan
Game! Everyone stood and screamed the entire game. During Michigan's
last possession, the whole stadium was rocking.
Name: Jeff
Grade: A
Pros: This is one of the
greatest stadiums ever! There is a long history and it is loud! Very
loud! Lloyd Carr, the Michigan head coach said it was the loudest
stadium he had ever been in. That means a lot when your used to
playing in a 110,000 seat sadium.
Cons: Parking is limited and it
can be very hard to get a ticket. almost every game is a cell out. The
stadium could be larger.
Memorable Moments: When Oregon
beat Michigan.
Beaver Stadium
Name: Joe Chic
Grade: C
Pros: The size is
amazing. 110,000 pack each game. THe fans can be very very loud
depending on the game. There is not a bad seat in the house. Fans are
nice. Amazing pregame.
Cons: The seating is
tight. Crowd can be VERY quiet if it is not a HUGE game. Many alumni
just clap instead of cheer. The Structure is sort of unpleasant and
unphotogenic from the outside.
Memorable Moments: When
PSU beat Nebraska in 2002 in front of 110,753 crazy fans on National
TV. THe crowd was deafing all night long. Just ask Neb QB Jamal Lord!
I got real good at reading lips that night due to the crowd noise. Did
I mention we won 40-7 !
Name: Go Lions
Grade: A
Pros: great fans, huge
scoreboard, one of the great in-stadium sound things(lion roar),
tailgating all-day long, white-out, bleachers are comfortable, has a
museum about penn state sports, great band, just being there, JoePa.
Cons: lion roar gets a
little annoying, if we're getting blown out we're quite, stadium needs
some modern technology in it.
Memorable Moments:
Larry Johnson getting 2000 yards in a season off a touchdown run
against MSU in 2002
Ben Hill Griffin Stadium
Name: Gregg
Podraza
Grade: A
Pros: "The
Swamp" is the perfect venue to watch college football. The stands are
so steep and go up at such a quick peak that when filled, the stands
look like they go almost straight up. From this feature, noise is
trapped in and at many times, it has been so loud that the noise has
induced chills and a deafening sound. I've been to about half of the
SEC football stadiums and by far, The Swamp offers the most unique
experience to watch a game!
Cons: Only one. On the
student side, after a game is over, it takes a little while to filter
out of the stadium.
Memorable Moments: Too
many to list and too many stick out. The most note-worthy is the
extremely exciting environment and the overpowering noise from the
crowd of 90,000 plus.
Name: Mike
Grade: A
Pros: The Swamp
on game days is probably the one of the greatest moments of college
for me. Being in the student section (rated the BEST student section
nationally by SI On Campus) is an unbelievable experience. Pros are:
having a 75 year old on campus stadium, 90,000+ crowds, being in row
90 and still having a great view, open all of the time in off season
to exercise in or just bask in its glory, insanely steep architecture
making it one of the loudest and toughest places to play in the
country, and fan rowdiness proves to be an amazing time for everyone
except for the away team.
Cons: I really cant
think of any... being a student here I will be able to have a valid
argument for anything negatively said about the stadium.
Memorable Moments: 2005
Florida State @ Florida... 7-0 Florida; FSU attempts short field goal,
kick gets blocks and returned about 90 yards for a Gator TD. The mosh
pit and overall bedlam in the student section was insane, the image of
me being crowd surfed around in our block right above the 'This is
Gator Country' wall is something I will never forget.
Bobby Dodd Stadium
Name: Andrew
Grade: A
Pros: Awesome college
environment for visiting teams fans which I am....(clemson fan) it is
the most fun besides the big game USC but tech and clemson is a pretty
big game for both schools and it is a great environment you sit so
close to the field every where in the stadium.
Cons: Small so bath rooms are
crowded, big games with large crowds you barley have enough room.
Memorable Moments: In 2000
clemson played Tech there and tech was number 9 in the nation the game
went to 2 overtimes but my tigers came out on top! GO TIGERS!!!
Bryant Denny Stadium
Name: John
Grade: A
Pros: The people in
Alabama are extremely friendly. We got a great taste of southern
hospitality. The stadium was excellent and they were loud. The pregame
video gave me chills listening to the bear's rumbling voice and the
great moments in Alabama football.
Cons: Traffic wasn't great
coming out of the stadium.
Memorable Moments: The Die-hard
fans of Alabama beats all I've ever seen, its obvious that football is
the king in that state. They tailgate all day and are wonderful
people. I will make a trip back in '06 when the 93'000 seats are
available. I'm a fan of the Crimson tide now!
Name: Bryant Woods
Grade: A
Pros: One of the largest
video screens in America, excellent hot dogs & other refreshments,
always at capacity during Crimson Tide games, even seats in the 3rd
upper deck seem close to the action
Cons: Not the largest stadium
in America...could use some elevators...
Memorable Moments: 87 thousand
crammed into the 83k capacity stadium for Tennessee vs. Alabama...we
lost, but it was a great experience.
Name: Bama Fan
Grade: A
Pros: There is no place
on earth like Bryant Denny Stadium on a Saturday. When the Bear gives
you the speech before the game with highlights of bamas greatest
moments on the jumbotron it gives eveybody chills. Its so loud on
during the game that some people have to bring earplugs. I get chills
when u come over that hill and u see the stadium in the distance. Man
there is no place like it..
Cons: Traffic
Memorable Moments: Alabama/Oklahoma
Game.
Name:
Russell Murphy
Grade: A
Pros:
Great fan support, right next to The Quad,
loud, intimidating, adding 9,000-10,000 new seats!
Cons:
Not many that I can think
of...traffic...and not beating Auburn there...yet.
Memorable Moments:
3 from the 2005 season:
3. Tyrone Prothro's amazing catch V.S. Southern Miss.
2. Beating #5 Florida 31-3. Alabama scored on the first play from
scrimmage to set off the monumental rout. Hey Urban That was ALABAMA
Football!
1st. Beating Tennessee on a FG with seconds remaining, and Demeco
Ryans picking off a UT pass to start the celebration! PS. The Rammer
Jammer cheer for both 1 & 2 were two of the happiest moments I have
had as an Alabama fan. Just need to beat Auburn at home now.
Byrd
Stadium
Name: Jerry
Grade: B
Pros: The crowd is
really into the game. For its relatively small size, it is one of the
loudest stadiums I've ever been in. If they ever expand Byrd so both
sides have an upper deck, it will be one of the most intimidating
stadiums in the entire country. Fans treat you with respect and are
very knowledgeable.
Cons: It's lop-sidded with the
one huge upper deck on one side and just a big press tower on the
other side. Capacity could be higher for the fan support they have.
Traffic after the game can be a mess. It's better to just hang out and
postgame tailgate rather than trying to leave.
Memorable Moments:
Unfortunately not too many good moments for my Tar Heels visiting
there. I did happen to attend the Maryland - FSU game in 2004 when
Maryland knocked off the #5 team in the nation. That place was nuts
that day. You couldn't help but be a Maryland fan that day.
Name: Matt
Grade: A
Pros:
Absolutely gorgeous. The stadium is
always filled with red and white, and the scoreboard and press boxes
are amazing. Every seat seems close to the action, and the crowd
cheers no matter what the score. Not to mention, I strongly believe
Maryland has one of the best pregame shows in country.
Cons:
Seating is kind of tight, and people are
usually always standing in the lower level, meaning that if you are
trying to sit and eat, you miss a lot of action.
Memorable Moments:
Boston College, Maryland, 2nd to last game
of the '05 season. Maryland lost a heartbreaker in the last 4
minutes, and my friends and I got into a verbal battle with Boston
College's Tony Gonzalez on the sideline.
Carrier
Dome
Name: J.W.Sprague
Grade: B
Pros: Unique in
that it is a dome smack dab in the middle of a city campus. It is a
loud and exciting building. There is a wall dedicated to Syracuse
football history. Many unique items and articles.
Prior to the game hang out on Marshall Street.Lots of shops and food
and bars.Manny's is best for Syracuse souvenirs. Campus is on a hill
that overlooks the city so be prepared to do alot of climbing. Check
out the quad and the beautiful Chapel located within but remember it's
a chapel, so save the noise for the dome. Take your kids they'll see
how beautiful and classic a campus can be.
Cons: Gets hot(no
A.C.)even though it's named after Carrier the multinational
heating/cooling giant.
With team/conference fortunes down right now the crowds can be light
for some games. Food is typical stadium fare (steamed dome dogs etc).
Memorable Moments:
Several years ago Florida came in ranked #4.Never saw so much orange
in all my life. Also Donovan Mcnab era was a blast. Marshall Street
rocked before and after games!!!!
Carter
Finley Stadium
Name: Patrick
Grade: A
Pros: Great tailgating,
probably the best in the ACC. Great crowd, that's usually very
knowledgeable. When ESPN brought Game day to Carter-Finley, they said
that they brought the biggest crowd ever for a Friday taping the day
before the game. Not a bad seat in the house if you're not
claustrophobic. The new Vaughn-Towers are finally complete and are
some of the nicest suites in the in the entire country. The statue
in front of the new Murphy Center is awe-inspiring.
Cons: We do have some rednecks,
and some of them can be quite obnoxious, but jerks can be found in any
crowd. The stadium's renovation is not yet complete. The Sea of Red
can be very intimidating if you're a fan of the visitors.
Memorable Moments: My most
memorable moment was during the 2002 season, when NCSU beat FSU, and
the students ran out onto the field and tore down the goal posts.
That game was one of the loudest I have ever been witness to. I
called my brother after a touchdown, when the crowd was going
completely bonkers. I had the volume as loud as it would go, and he
still could not hear me.
Name: William
Grade: B
Pros: After it's
recent expansion, the stadium has a big-time feel. Fans have sold the
place out for their beloved Wolfpack. Tailgating is easily the best
in North Carolina, possibly the ACC. Very passionate fans that aren't
bandwagoneers like their rivals down the road in Chapel Hill. Parking
is easy.
Cons: Off campus
setting - fans can turn on their team quickly during the games.
Gameday experiences have been shaky the past few years - there was the
small-deal "Mexi-cam" incident, and the big-deal tailgating murder.
Fans can be a little confrontational at times.
Memorable Moments: One
of the best games at the stadium didn't involve the Wolfpack at all.
Hurricane Floyd moved East Carolina's home game vs. #9 Miami to
Carter-Finley, where the Pirates upset the Hurricanes after rallying
from 20 points down in the second half. It was memorable not only
because the Pirates beat the "Hurricanes" after the eastern part of
the state was so devastated, but also because of the open-arms NC
State had in welcoming rival ECU to their house.
Doak
Campbell Stadium
Name: Josh Sims
Grade: A
Pros: The structure of
the stadium is awesome, you actually have seat room unlike a lot of
stadiums the fans are very knowledgeable, and the warchant is the best
thing i have ever heard in my life go noles.
Cons: Nothing. Its the best i
have been to a lot of stadiums i live in TN, neyland stadium doesn't
hold a candle to the doak no contest thats for all u UT fans.
Memorable Moments: My first
game in 2004 fsu took on the uva cavs a top 10 matchup the stadium was
electric it was the greatest day of my life and the noles rolled 36-3.
Name: James
Grade: A
Pros: Doak has to be one
of the top stadiums in college football. It's the largest brick
structure in the South. It features one of the largest stained glass
windows in the world. The stained glass window is of Bobby Bowden
over looking the field. The stadium is always filled to capacity
(83,000).
Cons: None really, maybe the
fact that the stadium looks so big because of the large amount of
offices/departments it houses.
Memorable Moments: Although FSU
lost the game, the game against Florida in 2004 was memorable. Chris
Rix's 4th quarter miracle TD pass that put the Noles in the game, put
Doak into a frenzy.
Dowdy Ficklen Stadium
Name: William
Grade: B
Pros: There's
not a bad seat in the house. The upper deck side has some great (and
relatively new) facilities and Pirate fans love their team. The
scoreboard is huge and the other endzone houses the impressive Murphy
Center. ECU has one of the best intros in college football too - a
computer animated ship sails into "the Fick" on the scoreboard screen,
then a siren sounds and the teams runs out of purple smoke to the tune
of Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" - a must see for visitors as it will
give you chills!
Cons: Tailgating scene
leads to the stands not being full until mid-way through the first
quarter (which is a shame considering the awesome intro). The
pressbox is in desperate need of a makeover (it looks like a
double-wide from the back) and there could be more club seats. Older
bathrooms on both lower levels could stand an upgrade as well.
Memorable Moments: Pitt
vs. ECU - 1991
Nationally ranked Panthers come into Greenville and lose as a late
touchdown puts the Pirates down by 1. Instead of playing for the tie,
QB Jeff Blake runs to the right and dives into the end zone for the
2-point conversion and the win. Possibly the loudest moment in Dowdy-Ficklen
history (and this was pre-expansion).
Honorable mention: NCSU's first visit to Greenville to finish the
1999 season. Largest crowd ever (over 50,000) and it was the last
game of the 1900's. ECU won easily and the fans rushed the field to
celebrate a successful season.
Folsom
Field
Name: Andrew S.
Grade: A
Pros: Spectacular
view of the foothills, flatirons, and the Rocky Mountains. undoubtedly
the best view from any college football stadium. also the newly
constructed boxes on the east side of the stadium add much more to the
already beautiful stadium.
Cons: Can't think of any now.
Memorable Moments: there are
quite a few that I have had here at Folsom field considering that I
have only been at CU for a year. the two that come to mind were the CU
v. CSU game in 2004 in which Billingsly had a late goal line stand to
preserve our win and all the students flowing on to the field to
congratulate the team. second, Klatts 60 yards pass to Ron Monteilh
to seal the win over k-state...and of course, the students united with
the players to celebrate an emotional win. GIVE US SOME RESPECT
PEOPLE!!!
Name: Nate
Grade: A
Pros: Blends in
perfectly with the campus, flagstone, ivy and tiled rooves. Mountain
views are abundant. Not a bad seat in the place. Grass is gorgeous,
sunshine is almost guaranteed and there is Pearl Street to head off to
before and/or after the game.
Cons: None.
Memorable Moments: The
62-36 crushing of "BCS Number 1" Nebraska in 2001. Any CSU game.
Watching Carson Palmer play in 2002. Watching Rashaan Salaam reach
2000 yards in 1994. A million others.
Name: Jeremy Parker
Grade: F
Pros: Gorgeous scenery,
awesome campus. The stadium is right in the heart of CU, and Boulder
is an awesome city.
Cons: The people inside. I've
been to 10/12 Big XII stadiums and never been treated worse. Ever. I
promise you with no reservations that Colorado students are the
rudest, most inconsiderate assholes you will ever have the misfortune
of encountering. Where to begin? Well, their fight song ends with,
"*&#@ 'em up, *&#@ 'em up, go CU"...At one point, their entire
students' section turned around to flip off our section...someone
lobbed a cup full of urine in our section, my friend's mom's tires were
slashed...I could keep going. If you're thinking about going to CU,
reconsider. Especially if you're bringing children. But if you still
want to go, do yourself a HUGE favor and bring some pepper spray. And
for the love of God, DON'T SIT ON THE STUDENT'S SIDE. I promise you
will regret it.
Memorable Moments:
Hmm...probably when a CU student punched one of our fans, and upon
hearing of the incident, a CU security guard high-fived the
punch-thrower. Ask ANYONE who has ever visited CU as a visiting fan,
and prepare to hear some horror stories.
Indian
Stadium
Name:
Jake
Grade: B
Pros: Just this great
intimate feeling! You feel like you're part of a very tightly knit
brotherhood. The stadium is in great condition and has some great
concessions (like Arby's, Corky's BBQ,etc). There's always a great
seat and thanks to the new 'Indian Eye' if you miss a play, you can
check it out on the nice jumbo tron!!
Every time I hear that "ARKANSAS STATE...INDIANS!" chant...still sends
goose bumps. parking isn't bad at all and the tailgating is the
friendliest you'll ever see. there is a pavilion restaurant next to a
beautiful lake fill with geese next to the stadium-great place to
spend time with that certain someone before the big game.
Cons: crowds are often
times small, but the occasional important games (like Memphis) will
bring in the BIG crowds. bathroom facilities are less impressive and
water was everywhere the time i went in. Also if you don't know the
jonesboro area it is kind of hard to find. It took me a couple of
passes to find the road that lead to the stadium.
Memorable Moments: my
first ever ASTATE game!! it was great! even when the crowd was only
10,405 it sounded like 30,000+ was there!! the fans were great and
friendly, and the game itself was spectacular, decided in the last
seconds with the Indians winning by a score of 9-3!! the weather was
perfect (rainy then windy the way I love it), the crowd was into it
and i was impressed with the stadium.. Overall the experience was
perfect!
Joan
C. Edwards Stadium
Name:
Matt
Grade: A
Pros: Great feel as you watch
the games. The field house is awesome looking, especially as the Herd
runs out with Marco and the steam.
Cons: A little too laid back
from the fans. Need a more vocal student and band section.
Memorable Moments: I-AA
playoffs and many MAC championships braving the cold weather.
Wouldn't have it any other way.
Jordan
Hare Stadium
Name:
David
Grade: A
Pros: The absolute awe of the
stadium. Driving up through campus, you can see Jordan-Hare tower
above the plains. The interior is beautiful, and the noise level is
unbelievable... The way the stadium is built, (straight up on the
sides and enclosed at both endzones), traps all the noise inside and
creates a very intimidating atmosphere for any opponent.
Cons: None really, since Auburn
has just completed part 1 of a 2 phase renovation, the bathrooms and
concessions are top notch.
Memorable Moments: 1989, when
Alabama came to Jordan-Hare for the first time, after years of
swearing the Crimson Tide would never play there. They did. The Tide
came in ranked #2, undefeated and looking at the National
Championship. The Tigers however, had other plans... Auburn beat the
Tide 30-20. AUsome!!!
Kenan
Stadium
Name:
John
Grade: D
Pros: Kenan Stadium is located
in a great setting and it is beautiful.
Cons: Kenan Stadium is very
dirty and the food they serve is bad. The worst thing is the fans.
The UNC fans are not very exciting at all. It is thee most quiet
stadium that I have ever been to.
Memorable Moments: When
Carolina shocked State with a 1 point victory on a very controversial
call.
Name:
Patrick
Grade:
D
Pros: One thing that is
great about this stadium is the campus and setting. UNC's campus is
one of the most beautiful ones in the country.
Cons: There are several
things wrong with this stadium. The UNC fans and students don't seem
to know very much about the game of football. They also aren't very
loud and most of all they almost never sell out. It is also very
claustrophobic with the seat backs.
Memorable Moments: The
most memorable moment of Kenan stadium was in the 2004 season. NC
State came into Kenan Stadium as pretty big favorites and probably
deserved to win the game. The game came down to one play. It was a
very controversial call on whether TA McClendon got over the line.
Many say they have pictures of him breaking the plane. Me, myself was
at the game and it sure did look like he got over, but still one of
the greatest football moments to ever happen to Chapel Hill, North
Carolina.
Name:
William
Grade: C
Pros: One of the nicest
looking stadiums around. Wooded setting - very classy appearance.
Cons: The fan support
is very West Coast-like. Fans have a problem showing up, even with
competitive Tar Heel teams, until the big games. Literally no
tailgating. Fans are not very knowledgeable.
Memorable Moments:
UNC's upset of top 5 Miami. Will be one of UNC's marquee wins for a
long time coming. Fans went absolutely nuts and tore down the goal
posts - great atmosphere for that game.
Kinnick Stadium
Name: Mark
Grade: A
Pros: Every seat is
close to the field and in the south endzone there is nothing
separating the fans from the endzones, making for some interesting
celebrations, natural grass field, tailgating around the stadium is
incredible, a walk down Melrose (just south of the stadium) is a must,
with many vendors and food stands, the noise level get ridiculous.
Cons: It is getting a much
needed renovation, the bathrooms and concession areas were too small
for the crowds, but the ongoing renovation is fixing this. Also
narrow seats will be fixed in the renovation. Gameday traffic can be
bad as the stadium is right on campus and next to the University
Hospitals.
Memorable Moments: Rob
Houghtlin's kick versus Michigan in 1985, Dallas Clark's catch against
Purdue in 2002, Michigan game in 2003, clinching a Big Ten
Championship and winning the Heartland Trophy by beating Wisconsin in
2004.
Name: Josh
Grade: A
Pros: The
stadium is smaller which makes the games very loud and intense. I like
how they are upgrading the stadium and it looks good. The fans for the
most part are nice.
Cons: Players could get
very hurt from how close the stands are to the field and how weird
some of the fans act about their team.
Memorable Moments: In
2003, where Michigan blew the game because of Lloyd Carr's idiotic
idea to run with the ball and punt it. Also in 2005,when I got revenge
and Michigan won the game in overtime and leaving the stadium with my
friend and our dads in dead silence, and when I was walking out of the
stadium some guy was pouting and stepping on the back of my shoes
trying to start something with me. (Go Blue)
Name: gophers are the best
Grade: B
Pros: very loud
crowd, HUGE scoreboard on south side, lots of tailgating, have a train
that takes you to the game if you want, crowd all black and gold, nice
tunnel area, home to very good team, here come the hawkeyes video,
season highlights video, let you on the field after game.
Cons: under
construction right now (2005) so it's very hard to get around, very
crammed in, not any signs telling where your section is, always say
"historic kinnick stadium", not the best fans
Memorable Moments: john
shevlin returning a 60 yard int return for a td in a Minnesota 52-28
loss down there. we'll get you next year in our house you gay little
hawkeyes.
Name: AJ
Grade: A
Pros: The stadium is
great. It is big (70k) but yet not humongous like Michigan. There is
not a bad seat in the house and its loud everywhere. The fans are
great and get very rowdy for big games. The student section is
amazing but sometimes alcohol gets the best of the bunch and they tire
after half.
Cons: A lot of reserved people
who dont get very excited for a game that isnt huge. When Michigan,
Iowa State or another program that has tradition comes to town its
always deafening. But when Northwestern plays at Kinick, it kind of
drags the crowd down.
Memorable Moments: Wisconsin
game 2004. The hawks were playing a rival for the Capital One bowl,
which is the best bowl outside of the BCS. My brother was in town for
thanksgiving from Oregon so we got tickets scalped and snuck down to
the 3rd row, 50 yd line and sat by players families. The crowd was
nuts and Iowa blew Wisconsin out in the second half.
Name: Hawks Fan
Grade: A
Pros: Kinnick is a great
place to watch a game because there is not a bad seat in the stadium.
Fans are rowdy and loud all the time. The student section is great as
well. It gets extremely loud, but gets louder every game due to the 18
game winning streak. Also, Kinnick is historic and very rich in
tradition as well as a rare architectural build. It is also one of the
oldest stadiums in the country.
Cons: Parking is a little
cramped around the stadium
Memorable Moments: Ohio State
vs. Iowa 2004- first time Iowa beat OSU in Kinnick since 1984. The
atmosphere was amazing, very loud. Fans stormed the field. Wisconsin
vs. Iowa 2004- And i thought the ohio state game was loud. this was
even louder due to the fact that the big ten championship was on the
line. Iowa dominated Wisc. 30-7. Atmosphere was amazing. The crowd
stood up the whole time and it was deafening the entire game. Iowa
became Big Ten Champs!! Fans stormed the field.
Name: fightonstate
Grade: A
Pros:
Great Atmosphere, and the best tailgating
I have seen in the Big Ten or SEC other than LSU.
Cons:
Very cramped seating, will always be
squished in tight with other fans because they sell out every game
even if its a DII team.
Memorable Moments:
I have only been there for when my Penn
State team plays there, and its loud as hell.
Kyle Field
Name: Henry
Grade: A
Pros:
great sight angles, noise, HUGE student
section, and unparalleled fan involvement.
Cons:
utilitarian, no-frills outside appearance.
Memorable Moments:
The entire student section stands for the
whole game and has yells (not cheers) that are signaled to them via
hand signals, the entire section yells these long, involved cheers
that go far beyond echoed chants, the team entrance behind the snare
line makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up as well.
Name: Josh
Grade: A
Pros:
Kyle Field is a great stadium the fans are
some of the best in the country. You will be respected if you are a
fan of the opposing team. The crowd noise is always a problem for the
oppsosing team. As many as 86,000 can fit in Kyle Field. About 30,000
students are always there and the fight song where everyone sways back
in forth is an amazing site. Also the students are known as the "12th
man".
Cons:
Lately there has been a lack of sellouts.
Also I wish the stadium was a little closer to the field but the is
still one of the loudest crowds in the nation in my opinion.
Memorable Moments:
2002 A&M beat number 1 ou,in 2000 gameday
was covering and ou was ranked either one or 2 but they were seeing if
the crowd noise could beat a record, it was very loud but did not
break record. Last of all the 1999 texas game after the bonfire
collapsed A&M won 20-16. 98' Number 1 Nebraska game A&M won 28-21.
Liberty Bowl
Name: NDIRISH BIGFAN
Grade: C
Pros: The stadium is
very large at 65,000 seats, with good, unobstructed views of the
field. Good food and seats are close to the field. Steep seating in
the shape of a sombrero makes the stadium seem larger.
Cons: The area around the
stadium is poorly kept and the outside is ugly. The tigers suck and
the few fans are very unenthusiastic. Memphis is also a shitty city.
Memorable Moments: When there
was a very large crowd on hand to see So. Miss. edge CSU in the
Liberty Bowl. BB King did the halftime show.
Lane
Stadium
Name: Patrick
Grade: A
Pros: Great fans. The
alumni always stand and make noise when the Hokies are on defense. On
third down they jingle their keys just to make extra noise. It is one
of the loudest stadiums I have ever been to. The "Let's Go...Hokies"
chant at the beginning of the game gave me chills. I was sitting near
the top of the upper deck in the end-zone and when the Hokies were
about to come onto the field, to the sounds of Mettallica's "Enter
Sandman", I felt some vibrations under my feet.
Cons: While the tailgating is
one of the best in the ACC, the parking is all spread out and many of
it is not even around the stadium.
Memorable Moments: While I was
there only once, I will always remember the game. NCSU beat VT 17-16
on a last second missed field goal by the Hokies' kicker Brandon
Pace. It was an exciting and one of the best defensively played games
ever. It was the only home and conference loss the Hokies had during
their 2004 ACC Championship season. I hope to one day return to this
amazing stadium.
Name: HokieFan1
Grade: A
Pros: Been to many pro &
college stadiums across the nation and Lane (post expansion) is the
loudest one I've ever experienced. Back in the 80s is was much more
open and therefore not as loud (although they used full charges in the
skipper back then so the cannon was much louder). The additions have
served to trap much more of the crowd noise. Need proof? Go to this
link
http://filebox.vt.edu/users/smacmeek/VT-UMD.wmv ...and that wasn't
even a rivalry game!
Cons: The game parking is
spread across a large portion of campus and traffic can be brutal
after the games.
Memorable Moments: The more
memorable ones from a noise perspective were the 62-0 night game
against #15 Syracuse in 1999, the 24-26 loss to Miami in 2001, and
last year's UVA game.
Name: Hokieboy4789
Grade: A
Pros: This place is
rockin' before the game. It's the hardest place to play in the ACC by
far. The fans are great and they don't throw batteries at you. Also,
the stadium is well designed.
Cons: None.
Memorable Moments: My most
memorable moment was when Tech knocked off number 2 Miami 31-7 in the
2003-2004 season. That was the loudest I have ever herd the stadium.
Name: Chris Haley
Grade: A
Pros:
Lane Stadium doesn't have the
history or capacities of Michigan Stadium, Neyland Stadium, or Kyle
Field. Lane Stadium does have the loudest and most raucous fans in the
nation, all 65,115. The East side and North endzone student sections
are very loud and the recently built South endzone and West side
addition, have made Lane Stadium that much more of a force to be
reckoned with on Saturdays in the Fall. Just a word to the wise, if
your team ever plays here, pray that the is not scheduled for the
nighttime.
Cons: It's really cold and windy
if you sit up top and don't cheer in October and November.. But who
wouldn't cheer??
Memorable Moments: The Miami-VT
game in 2003. Everybody has to break a regular season winning streak.
31-7, Go Hokies!
Name: Football Lover
Grade: A
Pros: LAne is by far the
most exciting, most impressive stadium I have ever been to. I grew up
going to every home game Tech played from about '88 but this is not a
biased opinion at all. No matter where the beloved Hokies are in the
rankings or even in the game the fans are absolutely incredible. It
gives me chills to think about it. They are very knowledgeable and
always cause a massive disturbance to opposing teams. Ive never seen
so much loyalty and love from a fanbase anywhere. I am saying this
as a UGA grad. Sorry dawgs, but you'll never know what youre missing.
(stadiums ive seen games): UGA, UVA, FLORIDA, NCSU, GT, AUBURN, LSU,
WVU, UNC, USC, CLEMSON, TENN
Cons: The stadium's parking
issues are about the only cons for the most intimidating field in the
country. The walks can be very far from the tailgate but the
beautiful campus makes the stumble easy.
Memorable Moments: My most
memorable moment would have to be the thrashing of arch rival UVA in
1990. Tech was 5-5 and facing a former #1 ranked UVA squad. The
university built bleachers specifically for the game so that 5,000
more students could attend. A 55,000 (then state record) crowd watched
in awe as the Hokies trampled UVA 38-13. Other memorable games were
the '95 win over Miami, 31-7 over McNabb in 95, every home game in '99
w/ Vick especially Clemson, 62-0 over #15 Syracuse, Miami, and BC, the
near win over #1 Miami in '01, the 28-6 whipping of LSU in '02, and
the loudest game ever, the '03 pounding of Miami 31-7, and the UVa '04
game where tech claimed at least a share of the acc in it's first
year(Uva still does not have an acc crown):)They then went down to
Miami to claim the title for themselves.
Los Angeles Coliseum
Name: Chris
Grade: A
Pros: It is very
large (92,000 fans), it hosts the number one team in the nation, and a
traditional powerhouse (USC Trojans), fans have been much more
enthusiastic over the years (average attendance from 60,000 to 90,000
since 2001), some great traditions (tommy trojan at mid field, him and
traveler riding after a touchdown, the band playing "Fight On", the
lighting of the torch in the fourth quarter).
Cons: The stadium is in
need of renovation, and the seats are not very steep so it does not
feel like 92,000 fans on top of the opponent, visitors are sometimes
louder than the USC fans. Traffic in LA sucks.
Memorable Moments: 2005
USC-Fresno State game. Reggie Bush broke a tackle and rushed down to
the 20 yard line, came to a full and complete stop, and ran
horizontally to the other side of the field before walking into the
endzone. The crowd got so loud on that play I thought I was in Neyland
stadium.
Memorial Stadium (Clemson)
Name: TJ
Grade: A
Pros: LOUDEST
Stadium by far. Up until this year the loudest outdoor facility on
record was LSU at 121 decibels. In September Memorial Stadium reached
126 decibels. The loudest ever recorded. Facts are facts, this place
rocks.
Cons: Big stinking hill
to walk up on one side.
Memorable Moments:
Never allowing a Heisman trophy winner to see either endzone.
Memorial Stadium (Indiana)
Name: Ohio State Fan
Grade: B
Pros: The
Stadium Has Beautiful Background and Wonderful Fans. Indiana Fans did
not hold back form having conversation with me and my friends.we went
to Ohio State vs. Indiana in 2005 and we had a blast. It is not the
largest stadium in the Big Ten but it was very fun to watch. The
Indiana Band Even performed our fight song for pregame, since our band
could not make it.
Cons: I went to
Memorial Stadium to get the unique experience of being the visitor
team instead of being at Ohio Stadium. Unfortunately More then 1 half
was buckeye fans, which made it fun, but not quite that unique
visiting experience I was looking for. The most interesting thing was,
that we (buckeye fans) could do our legendary O-H-I-O cheer there.
Something we usually do at Home games. Indiana fans need to come out
in full force next time.
Memorable Moments: A.J.
Trapasso's 76 yard punt down the field giving Indiana a horrible field
position. The 30,000+ Buckeye fans were very loud for being an away
game.
Memorial Stadium (OU)
Name: Alex Hudsonpillar
Grade: A
Pros: Most people know
that OU renovated their stadium, and I think it is so great because of
it's size and history.
Cons: Cons? What cons? This
stadium is perfect not a bad seat in it.
Memorable Moments: In 2000 on
our national championship year when we were number 3 and Nebraska was
number 1. Andre Woolfolk bobbled the ball with one hand and tipped it
in the air three times before he caught it. That was pretty cool. And
we started chanting "Over rated" and "We're number one." That makes
Gaylord Memorial Stadium memorable.
Name: Chris
Grade: A
Pros: The lower tier of
the stadium hosts a wide variety of fans who are packed in
comfortably. Great views from any where in the stadium.
Cons: The new upper-deck is too
far away from the field and gives the whole stadium a lopsided look.
The seats are expensive up there and the visibility is terrible. Fans
are often swayed inside to the lounges to take part in drinks.
Memorable Moments: Watching
Adrian Peterson's first touchdown and the stadium actually being quiet
than normal because they were in awe. That moment doesn't get enough
recognition. He actually quieted 83,000 people because he is so good.
Memorial Stadium (Kansas)
Name: Peter
Grade: A
Pros: Atmosphere,
location, scenery, history
Cons: Its a little old and run
down. The track should be removed and seating should be expanded to
the field.
Memorable Moments: KU beating
Kansas State in 2004. The crowd was so loud Kansas State burned all
of its timeouts early in the first half and the qb still tried to a
4th, resulting in a delay of game. The whole time the crowd was
absolutely deafening, coming to a climax in the 4th quarter when the
Wildcats had a 4th down to try to extend the game.
Memorial Stadium (Nebraska)
Name: Brian Baker
Grade: A
Pros: Absolutely the
most intense game day experience. so loud and extremely gracious
friendly fans`- everyone who thinks they have been to a great venue
must go here.. it will put them all to shame.. ive been to rose bowl
. notre dame penn state Michigan fsu Miami (orange bowl) and
Tennessee and they dont even compare
Cons: old. tightly packed
fans.. bleacher seats...
Memorable Moments: watching NU
Vs colorado in 1994
#1 vs. #2
Name: NU Fan
Grade: A
Pros: The
Best stadium I've ever seen a great atmosphere very loud. The best
tunnel walk any1 has ever seen and the black shirts (enough said) and
were getting a new T.V. 117feet wide and 33feet high and new skyboxes.
Cons:
Its very old and bleak.
Memorable Moments:
When Nebraska and Texas Tech played east
other in 05 when NU was down buy 21 at half and we tied it in the
fourth and on the second to last play of the game we intercepts it and
then fumble then TTU gets it basket nad gets a 20 yard touchdown.
Name: Alex Z.
Grade: A
Pros: This
stadium is got to be the loudest stadium in the world, it is a great
place and with the new 117foot wide 33foot tall TV and new skyboxs it
will bring in even more to here. It is just nutz. Also they have all
kinds of food and very nice people also some hotties!
Cons:
Old needs new paint job and nothing else.
Memorable Moments:
When we were playing Texas tech in 05 we
were down 21 in the first half then we fought back and tied it in the
forth with 3 minutes. the they scored a touchdown on the last play.
Name: Josh
Grade: A
Pros: The
"Sea of Red" is amazing these are in my mind some of the best fans in
all of college football. They are so dedicated. I love the way they
are adding more seating in the North endzone and a huge scoreboard. I
also love the introductory with the "Tunnel Walk" to the song Series ,
I get chills every time it goes on.
Cons:
There are cracks in the south side stands
making it easy to dump what ever falls over on peoples heads. My
friend and I dumped water down it once to see what happened.
Memorable Moments:
In 2001,when I saw Eric Crouch play his
last season against Texas Tech and won. Also seeing two games in 2004
when they didnt even make a bowl game and both in 05' and 06' the
Red-White spring game, where it was pretty much sold out.
Michigan
Stadium
Name: John
Grade: A
Pros: The
biggest and baddest stadium in all of college football, with no
corporate advertising invasion whatsoever on the inside. Designed
exactly as all stadiums should be, in a pure bowl with all
shoulder-to-shoulder benches and minimal press/luxury boxes. Every one
of the 107,501 seats is a great one with this brilliant design. The
fact that the stadium is built almost entirely into the ground means
that it can and likely will be expanded to an even more unbelievable
capacity in coming years (150,000 or more?) It should also be noted
that Michigan has the advantage of having "The Victors," the greatest
fight song in all of college football. And it is worth mentioning that
the tailgating scene is top of the line as well. The overall tradition
is just superior to any other team in college football.
Cons:
Michigan fans have often been touted as
being tame relatively to other college football fans, but I have not
found this to be true; just because Wolverines don't need pepper spray
to help them figure out when the game is over doesn't mean that they
don't get VERY worked up during games. On the same note, some feel
that the fan-to-noise ratio in The Big House is weak, but if some sort
of half dome or other architectural addition was put over the top of
the stadium to capture the noise, it would instantly become INSANELY
loud (this open feel is the one flaw in the otherwise perfect stadium,
although it does make for amazing aerial shots). Only other thing is
that permanent lights installed into the stadium (and by extension
more night games) would be nice.
Memorable Moments:
2004 Michigan beating Michigan State in
triple overtime thanks to Braylon Edwards heroics; 2003 Michigan beats
Ohio State in the 100th Big Game; 2005 Michigan beats Penn State on
last second touchdown pass from Chad Henne to true freshman Mario
Manningham and stadium explodes.
Name: Josh
Grade: A
Pros: I
loved almost everything about it. The fans new their football, the
band is amazing, and sitting in the 15th row felt like you were
literally on the field. I loved every second of it.
Cons:
It is so big and there is one way in and |
