Rubber Bowl
Akron, OH

Located in Akron, Ohio, the home of the Zips has one of the funniest names in college football. Prior to the Rubber Bowl’s opening, the Akron Zips had played at Buchtel Field for many years. Talk of a new stadium for the football team began in 1933 and was led by B. E. Fulton. By the end of the decade enough money had been raised and construction began on a new football facility for the team.

The Akron Zips played their first game at the Rubber Bowl on October 5, 1940 against Western Reserve. When it opened, the Rubber Bowl had a capacity of roughly 30,000 which it maintains today. Over the years, the Rubber Bowl has underwent few improvements. In 1971 the lighting was improved for better night games and two years later the natural grass field was replaced by Astroturf. A new scoreboard was installed at the Rubber Bowl in 1991. The latest improvement came before the 2003 season when AstroPlay was installed.
