Rubber
Bowl
Akron, OH
Located in Akron, Ohio, the
home of the Zips has one of the funniest names in college
football. Prior to the Rubber Bowl’s opening, the Akron Zips played at Buchtel Field for many years. Talk of a new stadium for the
football team began in 1933 and was led by B. E. Fulton. By the end of
the decade enough money had been raised and construction began on a
new football facility for the team. The Akron Zips played their first
game at the Rubber Bowl on October 5, 1940 against Western Reserve.

When it opened, the Rubber Bowl had a capacity of roughly 30,000.
The stadium received its name from the tire's industry's presence in
Akron. Over the years, the Rubber Bowl has underwent few
improvements. In 1971 the lighting was improved for better night games
and two years later the natural grass field was replaced by Astroturf.
A new scoreboard was installed at the Rubber Bowl in 1991. The latest
improvement came before the 2003 season when AstroPlay was installed.
The 2008 season will be the Zips last season at the Rubber Bowl. In
August 2007 the university announced plans to construct a new football
stadium. Named InfoCision Stadium, the $55 million facility will have
a seating capacity of 30,000 with 16 luxury suites and 486 club seats.
The Zips will play their first game at their new stadium on September
19, 2009. The Rubber Bowl will be demolished.
