Home of the North Texas
Mean Green, Fouts Field has been home to the football team for more than a
half a century. The Mean Green made their debut at the stadium in 1952. It
was originally known as Eagle Field but in 1954 it was named after Theron J. Fouts, who coached all sports at North Texas
in the 1920s. Fouts Field had a seating capacity of 20,000 when it
opened and also was the home of the track team.

For more than four
decades, the stadium remained the same. In the early 1990s, UNT
students passed a referendum for an increase in student fees for an
addition to Fouts Field. By the 1994 season, 10,000 seats were added
to Fouts Field increasing the seating capacity to just over 30,000.
The most recent change at Fouts Field came before the 2005 season when
the Astroturf playing surface was replaced with Sportex Omnigrass. A
new 30,000 seat stadium in under construction in Denton and should
open in Fall 2011 for the Mean Green football team.
