Kinnick
Stadium
Iowa City, IA
Opening in 1929, fans flock
from all over Iowa to Kinnick Stadium to see Hawkeye football. The
stadium was constructed as the need arose for a new football stadium
for the University of Iowa football program. A new stadium was built
and completed in time for the 1929 Hawkeye season. The originally
capacity was 53,000, very large for a stadium at this time. In 1939,
the stadium was
named Iowa Stadium. The stadium received its current name, Kinnick
Stadium, in 1972 after sportswriter Gus Schrader lobbied to get the
stadium named after former Heisman Trophy winner Nile Kinnick.

Several expansions have occurred at Kinnick Stadium
over the years, including the addition of seats in the south end zone
in 1956 and the north end zone being enclosed in 1983 increasing the
capacity to 66,000. In 1997 a video/scoreboard was added to Kinnick
Stadium. Today, the stadium has a capacity of just over 70,000. Fans
from all over Iowa still enjoy coming to Kinnick Stadium each fall to
see quality football. In March 2004, the school announced plans that
Kinnick Stadium would be renovated bringing the stadium up to date
with other Big Ten stadiums. Included as part of the $87 million
renovation are a new press box, a southside plaza and a 12 foot bronze
statue of Nile Kinnick, the 1939 Heisman Trophy winner.
