No stadium in college football boasts the same resume as the Georgia State Panthers home: site of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, MLB All-Star Game, MLB World Series and countless other large scale events. The history of the Panthers is relatively short, as Georgia State began fielding a football team in 2010, playing at the Georgia Dome, former home of the Atlanta Falcons. They played here for seven season before moving to Georgia State Stadium. The Panthers home is the former home of MLB’s Atlanta Braves and was known as Turner Field from 1997-2016. It was originally built for the Braves and as the site of the 1996 Summer Olympics. In November 2013 the Braves announced plans to build a new stadium, SunTrust Park, north of Atlanta, leaving the city owned stadium empty following their departure after the 2016 season. In January 2017 Georgia State purchased the stadium and surrounding land. Following the purchase of the facility, work began immediately on transforming the baseball stadium into a football only stadium. Several rows and the dugouts were removed, a new grandstand was built in what was once right field and artificial turf was installed. Many areas that were popular during Braves games remain, but have been renamed and upgraded. The entry plaza was renamed the 1913 Promenade, the Chop House is now the State House Grill and the 755 Club is now known as the University Club. All of the upper deck seats remain, but will not be used unless needed. The seating capacity will be approximately 25,000. On August 31, 2017 the Panthers played their first game here against Tennessee State.
